Astana is ready to put in place favorable conditions to facilitate freight flows from China to Europe across Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Industry and New Technology Asset Issekeshev told September 16 at the 15th session of the Kazakh-British Trade and Industry Council, Novosti Kazakhstan reports. “Kazakhstan’s goal is to secure a greater role in transit operations to and from West China which is rampantly developing. Last week we had talks in Urumqi (…) the Kazakh side emphasized that we are ready to put in place all the conditions to facilitate freight flows from China to Europe across Kazakhstan”, Asset Issekeshev said. According to him, “this year a pilot train has been launched from China to Germany [across Kazakhstan]. The 15 days was a good indicator”. “This year Kazakhstan is launching an international trade center Khorgos at the Kazakh-Chinese border. A new railway link is to be launched with an efficient link-up to the Chinese railways system. In 2013 Kazakhstan is expected to complete its segment of the West China – West Europe motor corridor. This year we are launching a special economic zone at Khorgos. The industrial zone and the logistics zone will make up a total of 6 000 hectares”, Issekeshev said. He said the Government had been developing a national logistics master plan. Notably, with the new railway to Turkmenistan, an extended sea port and the West China – West Europe motor corridor in place, Mangistau oblast will be a notable transport hub. “Logistics is a crucial direction. We are working with a diversity of companies and inviting companies from Great Britain to participate”, Issekeshev said.
