Tengrinews.kz – The Government of Kazakhstan has withdrawn from the Mazhilis a bill concerning cooperation with the Russian Federation in the space sector.
The bill pertains to an agreement with the Russian government on providing a land plot in Kazakhstan as a designated area for the fall of rocket booster stages during launches from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.
The draft resolution has been published on the "Open NPA" website.
To clarify the reasons for the withdrawal, Tengrinews.kz reached out to the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation, and Aerospace Industry.
"The agreement provides for granting the Russian side a land plot as Drop Zone No. 120 in the Aktobe and Kostanay regions. Since there is another drop zone, No. 120A, located in the Kostanay region, which serves the same technical purpose (for launching spacecraft in a northern direction to near-polar orbits), it has been decided to use only Drop Zone No. 120A, which has already been ratified. In this regard, the withdrawal of the bill on the ratification of the agreement for Drop Zone No. 120 from the Mazhilis is planned. It is important to emphasize that this decision does not affect the implementation of joint space projects between Kazakhstan and Russia," the ministry stated.
According to the ministry, Kazakhstan had previously allocated Russia a land plot (Zone No. 120) for rocket stage falls after launches from Baikonur. However, another nearby site (Zone No. 120A) serves the same purpose.
Since Zone No. 120A has already been approved and is in use, it was decided to keep only this site and cancel the agreement for Zone No. 120.
Reminder: Kazakhstan and Russia have decided to amend the agreement on the creation of the "Baiterek" space rocket complex at Baikonur Cosmodrome. Mazhilis deputies have begun reviewing the relevant bill. Read more here.
