Almaty Subway was awarded with The Golden Chariot International Public Transport Prize in the nomination of The Transport Project of the Year in the Republic of Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing Metropoliten press-service. The Prize was awarded on May 15, 2012 in Moscow as part of the celebration of Russian Subway's anniversary. Leading transport companies from Kharkov, Kemerovo and Tula (Russia) were awarded with Prizes as well Almaty Metropoliten company. The Golden Chariot organizing committee received a large number of applications from different countries of the world and selected the best transport companies developing forward-looking city public transport and respected by passengers. Metropoliten company was established on September 14, 2009. The city Akimat (municipal authorities) was the founder of the company. Almaty Public Transport and Automobile Roads Department is the Program Administrator. About 1000 people work for the company at present, the company’s press-release reads. The first phase of the First Line of Almaty Subway was commission on December 1, 2011. President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev attended the official ceremony of opening and became the first passenger of Almaty Subway.
