3,000 cattle destroyed in East Kazakhstan over foot-and-mouth disease

More than 2,7 thousand cattle had to be destroyed in East Kazakhstan oblast because of an outbreak of the foot-and-mouth disease in the region, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the region's Emergency Department. On January 4 1076 great cattle and 1705 small cattle was destroyed in three villages where the disease flared up, the Emergency Department reported. The total amount of cattle vaccinated is 64 677 great cattle and 212 062 small cattle. 7175 pigs were also vaccinated. According to the Emergency Department of East Kazakhstan Oblast vaccination of the animals is still continuing. Earlier Tengrinews.kz reported that to compensate the damage caused by the outbreak of the foot-and-mouth disease the government allocated 55 million tenge from the budget for Urdzharsk village of East Kazakhstan oblast. Foot-and-Mouth Disease is a severe, highly communicable disease of cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and deer. There are several different strains of the virus that cause the disease. Humans do not catch the virus.
