Dike burst: People back to their houses in Karaganda Oblast

People evacuated after the dike burst flooding Kokpekty village in Karaganda Oblast are now back in their houses, Tengrinews reports citing the press-service of Kazakhstan Emergencies Ministry.

People evacuated after the dike burst flooding Kokpekty village in Karaganda Oblast are now back in their houses, Tengrinews reports citing the press-service of Kazakhstan Emergencies Ministry.

"The water is being pumped from the cellars and the territory of the village is being cleaned by crew brought over by the Emergency Ministry and local executive bodies. The Minister of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan Vladimir Bozhko together with the Akim (Governor) of Karaganda Oblast have inspected the disaster site, met with the villagers, answered their questions and condoled the victims' families. All the evacuated people have returned to their houses in Kokpekty village," the message says.

Nearly 200 houses of Kokpekty village were flooded after the dike blocking the Kokpeky River burst at night on March 31 releasing the water from the reservior onto the village. 400 hundred people were evacuated and accommodated in nearby schools or at their relatives’.

Five people were killed and nine people required serious medical aid. Six of them were hospitalized with hypothermia. One needed intensive care and was taken to Karaganda for treatment. None received any serious wounds or injuries. A special commission is evaluating the damaged.

Communication has been restored in the village, so as most of its power supply. Drinking water is delivered on schedule.
