Tengrinews.kz - Police in Almaty detained a Chinese citizen in a private home who had stored about 4,500 saiga antelope horns in 50 boxes.
The special operation was conducted by the staff of the “CyberPol”. According to the 58-year-old detained man, he bought the saiga horns in the Almaty region and planned to transport them to China for medicinal purposes.
"A criminal case has been initiated for the illegal extraction and destruction of saiga antelopes, as well as for the acquisition, storage, sale, import, export, forwarding, and transportation of illegally obtained saiga antelopes or their derivatives, including horns. The channel for the sale of saiga horns is being established," reported colonel Talant Isaev, head of the Criminal Police Department of Almaty.
Earlier, recently circulated footage on the internet showed dying saiga antelopes in the West Kazakhstan region, raising concerns among local residents about possible dangerous infections and another mass die-off of animals similar to previous incidents. Locals vividly remember the devastating die-off caused by the bacterial infection pasteurellosis, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of these steppe antelopes.
