Umirzak Shukeev appointed to head Samruk-Kazyna Sovereign Wealth Fund

Umirzak Shukeev has been appointed to head the Samruk-Kazyna Sovereign Wealth Fund, replacing Timur Kulibayev. Samruk-Kazyna is a joint stock company in Kazakhstan which owns, either in whole or in part, many important companies in the country, including the national rail and postal service, the state oil and gas company KazMunayGas, the state uranium company Kazatomprom, Air Astana airline, and numerous financial groups. The state is the sole shareholder of the fund. “Timur Kulibayev has been relieved of the duties [of the Fund’s Head]. U. Shukeev has been appointed to the position”, Kazakhstan’s PM Karim Massimov wrote in his Twitter account. Prior to that, Mr. Shukeev was relieved of his duties of the First Vice Prime Minister following a respective presidential decree. According to the Fund’s Press Service, Mr. Kulibayev voluntarily submitted his resignation letter in the wake of the public unrest in the oil producing city of Zhanaozen. According to PM Massimov’s Twitter, Mr. Shukeev keeps on chairing the ad-hoc government committee to investigate into the events in Zhanaozen. From May 2007 up to his appointment to Samruk-Kazyna, Mr. Shukeev served as the First Vice Prime Minister. Born in 1964, Mr. Shukeev holds a PhD degree in economics from the Moscow Institute of Economics and Statistics. Among other official positions in the Government, in different periods he served as Minister of Economy; Minister of Economy and Trade; Vice Head of the President’s Administration; Governor of Kostanai oblast; Mayor of Astana; Governor of South Kazakhstan oblast; First Vice Prime Minister.
