Tengrinews.kz — The well-known airline Lufthansa announced the cancellation of 20,000 flights scheduled until October.
Details were published on the airline’s website. The schedule adjustments are aimed at reducing unprofitable short-haul routes across the Lufthansa Group network. The consolidation of the European route network is being carried out based on the group’s six hubs — in Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels and Rome.
“In total, 20,000 short-haul flights will be removed from the schedule through October, equivalent to approximately 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel, the price of which has doubled since the outbreak of the Iran conflict,” the airline explained.
The flight schedule began to be reduced from April 20: 120 flights were removed from the schedule. Along with them, three routes from Frankfurt were temporarily canceled:
- Bydgoszcz (Poland);
- Rzeszow (Poland);
- Stavanger (Norway).
The company is revising the schedule for the coming months taking into account the reduction of flights. The updated plan will be published at the end of April or early May. It will primarily affect short routes for the entire summer season and is expected to make the schedule more stable.
At the same time, Lufthansa Group expects that there will be no fuel shortages. For this purpose, the company purchases fuel in advance and hedges against price increases.
