Several hundred people protested in New York on Friday demanding police reform and justice for the African-American man who died from injuries sustained in custody in Baltimore, AFP reports.

The demonstration came as six Baltimore police officers were charged over the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, after days of riots and protests in cities along the US East Coast.

Gray's death has again shone a damning light on what critics say is overzealous police tactics, particularly in dealing with black Americans.

"Justice for Freddie Gray," "black and brown lives matter" and "disarm the NYPD" were emblazoned on placards that protesters held aloft in Union Square, in the center of Manhattan, as police helicopters buzzed overhead.

A large number of police officers also looked on.

"It's not just Baltimore, it's everywhere in this country. I think people are realizing what's going on," said "AJ," a 21-year-old student from New Jersey.

"It's good to see people going out to demonstrate. We need justice reform and a way to push for that is protesting on the streets."

Police made 143 arrests on Wednesday when protests erupted in New York over Gray's death.
