Kazakhstan circus gymnasts Dariya Abduakhassova and Dana Rysbekova won the Grand-Prix of the International Circus Festival that was held in the Netherlands, Tengrinews.kz reports, referring to Dariya Abduakhassova, prize winner of the Festival and one of the participants of the contortion duo. The 17th International Circus Festival was held in the Netherland city of Enschede on December 21-29. Circus artists from Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Romania, Ukraine and France took part in the event. The organizers of the Festival handed out questionnaires to randomly chosen guests before the event for them to grade the artists’ shows. Results of the voting were processed electronically. Professional jurymen judged the shows and awarded artists with special prizes for their professional skills along with the jury from the audience. Abduakhassova and Rysbekova from Astana circus demonstrated a unique 5-minute long event and both the audience and professionals were impressed with their show. They won the Grand-Prix of the Festival - the Golden Clown award - and a special jury prize. “We demonstrated a 5-minutes-long contortion exercise. It consisted of two parts: a slow one and a fast one. We shot bows with our feet, holding a special stand with our teeth. We have been working together with Dana for seven years and it is not the first festival where we won awards,” Abduakhassova said. According to her, the jurymen liked that the gymnasts adhered to Kazakh national traditions. The artist also said that Kazakhstan had taken part in the festival before, but it was the first time when the country won the first place. “After our victory European experts realized that there are decent circus artists in Kazakhstan. The director of the Festival took our business cards and said that he would like to invite more Kazakhstan artists next time,” the gymnast said. The International Circus Festival is one of the most prestigious circus competitions in the world and the Golden Clown statuette is a much desired prize among circus performers.
