Kazakhstan has achieved a significant progress in building its democracy, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports citing President Nursultan Nazarbayev. “I believe that Kazakhstan is set for democracy today, otherwise we wouldn’t have chaired an organization like OSCE and couldn’t have hosted its summit (OSCE summit in Astana in December 2010),” he said at the briefing after his meeting with Austrian President Heinz Fischer on Monday, October 22 in Vienna. “We are thankful for appreciating our efforts. The elections are absolutely free in Kazakhstan these days. Kazakhstan has free mass media. It is free from Soviet-era censorship. We don’t have those who are persecuted for political reasons. We have 46 religious confessions and 130 ethnic groups. Nobody is discriminated because of religion or belief and everyone has equal rights,” he said. “Of course, Kazakhstan is not as advanced as Europe that has been building what it has for hundreds of years. We believe that Kazakhstan’s path to democracy is just starting, that’s why we are learning and considering the advice of our friends. I think that among all the post-Soviet countries Kazakhstan has achieved a big and significant progress in this issue, which is noted by our partners and friends,” President stated.
