The Agreement on Friendship between Kazakhstan and Russia will be updated and expanded before the end of 2013. It was announced following the talks of Presidents Nazarbayev and Putin in Moscow October 9. The meeting of the two leaders was held at the Big Kremlin Palace in Moscow. The sides had talks on key directions of cooperation. “It is very gratifying that you accepted Russia’s invitation (…) to further discussions on expanding political and trade and economic ties (…)”, President Putin said. “During our talks in Pavlodar (at the transborder cooperation forum) I emphasized that the relationship between Russia and Kazakhstan are a paragon of cooperation within the post-Soviet space”, President Nazarbayev noted. “Kazakhstan is an oil producing nation just like Russia is. And in the bilateral trade turnover the share of this commodity – traditional for both of us – isn’t so big. However, the trade turnover is on the rise. The figure is record high. Last year the indicator exceeded $20 billion. It proves that integration efforts do pay back”, Putin elaborated. “$25 billion and half of that in the H1 2012. Following the launch of the Customs Union the trade turnover has been growing by 30% a year. It is a great indicator”, Nazarbayev agreed. Earlier President Nazarbayev broached the subject of renewing the Agreement on Friendship between Russia and Kazakhstan as of 25 May, 1992. During Russian President Putin’s visit to Kazakhstan in June the two sides signed a protocol on amendments into the Agreement. “We are thinking of substantially renewing this significant agreement, adjusting it to the modern day’s requirements to promote the Single Economic Space of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus”, President Nazarbayev said. Prolongation of the Agreement is to take place this coming December.
