The European badger (Meles meles) inhabits the Almaty State Nature Reserve. It is especially active at dawn, in the evening, and at night, though it generally leads a secretive lifestyle.
“It isn’t picky about food: its diet includes small rodents, birds and their eggs, snakes, lizards, insects, and plant matter. In search of food, it may come close to forest ranger posts,” the reserve staff noted.
Badgers usually wake from hibernation in late February or early March. Mating season runs from March to June, and litters typically consist of 1 to 5 cubs.
The animal’s main natural predators include the snow leopard, lynx, wolf, and fox. In 2024, during scientific research on wildlife in the reserve, badgers were recorded 93 times by camera traps.
Previously, rare imperial eagles were captured on camera in the “Ertis Ormany” reserve in the Pavlodar region.
