Tengrinews.kz - A new study from the American Cancer Society (ACS) has revealed that up to 40 percent of cancer cases and deaths among adults aged 30 and over are caused by preventable factors, according to Euronews Health.
The study covered 30 cancers and 18 risk factors that can be controlled.
“A large number of cancer cases and deaths in the United States are attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors, indicating the potential to substantially reduce the cancer burden through broad and equitable implementation of preventive initiatives,” said Dr Farhad Islami, lead author of the study.
The study identified smoking as the top risk factor, responsible for 20 percent of all cancers and 30 percent of cancer-related deaths. Other significant factors include obesity and alcohol consumption.
To reduce the risk of cancer, it is recommended to keep physically active, maintain a normal weight and protect yourself from the sun. Keeping up with necessary vaccinations, such as for the Hepatitis B virus and HPV, was also recommended. They help to reduce the risk of chronic infection and cancer associated with these viruses.
