Tengrinews.kz - A decrease in anthrax incidence has been noted in Kazakhstan, according to the Ministry of Healthcare.

"Anthrax cases in Kazakhstan have decreased by half over the past 10 months of 2024 compared to the same period last year. A total of 17 cases have been registered this year," the Ministry of Healthcare reported.

Anthrax is a dangerous infectious disease that affects humans and animals and is transmitted through livestock (cows, sheep, goats, etc.). It is usually not transmitted from person to person, with infection occurring through damaged skin, less commonly through the respiratory or gastrointestinal tracts. The skin form of the disease has a favorable prognosis, while other forms often result in fatal outcomes.

The National Center for Public Health under the Ministry of Healthcare noted that for the prevention of anthrax, those who own private livestock must observe personal hygiene measures, vaccinate animals, and avoid independently slaughtering diseased (dead) animals without veterinary inspection.

"It is advised not to purchase meat and meat products from private individuals selling in unauthorized locations without sanitary and veterinary control. When buying meat at markets, it is necessary to request a veterinary certificate confirming the product’s safety. Workers involved in processing, transporting, and selling livestock products should adhere to personal hygiene and preventive measures. Vaccination of animals is an important preventive measure against this serious infection. Employees of meat processing plants, veterinarians, and laboratory workers handling the anthrax pathogen should receive preventive vaccinations," the statement reads.

Earlier, we reported that 37 confirmed cases of anthrax were recorded across the republic in 2023, including 1 fatal case.
