This museum is one of the oldest and largest museums not only in Kazakhstan but also in the entire Central Asian region. The museum collection has more than 300,000 units of storage. Among the most remarkable artifacts are a copy of the Golden Man from Issyk’s mound, unique ancient gold items from the Kargaly and Zhalaulinsky treasures, and samples of nomad weapons from the Saka period.
There are seven main halls with different themes: the paleontological past, ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary history, and the cultural heritage of Kazakhstan. Every year in May, on International Museum Day, the eldest curator of relics participates in the "Night at the Museum" event, and admission is free.

The dominant part of the collection, of course, is occupied by paintings by the famous artist Abylkhan Kasteev, such as "Turksib", "Aksai Quarry", "Amangeldy Detachment", or a unique portrait of the Kazakh writer Abai in his youth. At the same time, Russian and European paintings are also well-represented. Exhibitions are often held in an interactive format, which is especially popular with young visitors.
