Hotel "Almaty"

Location: Kabanbay Batyr Street, 85.

What’s interesting about it?

At the time of its construction in 1967, the Almaty Hotel was the first high-rise building in a seismic zone. The latest, at that time, architectural solutions were used in its design. The building of the hotel, built in the modernist style, looked like a curved bow. This form of building was proposed by the head of the republic Dinmukhamed Kunaev, to close the corners of Panfilov and Kalinin streets. An interesting fact is that the first director of the hotel was a legendary person - Rakhimzhan Koshkarbaev, who hoisted the Victory Banner at the Reichstag in 1945.

What kind of entertainment is there?

“Almaty” became the first hotel in the republic with a modern hot water supply and heat systems; marble and granite were used in the interior decoration. This hotel was supposed to clearly demonstrate the achievements of Soviet Kazakhstan.

The hotel has undergone renovations that have preserved its historical appearance and is now a modern hotel in the city center with 520 beds. It is still one of the city symbols, located in the cultural center. The Abai Opera House is located directly on the opposite side of the street. The restaurant “Issyk,” located in the Almaty Hotel, was once the most prestigious place in Almaty; not everyone could visit it.

You can find the iconic “Nedelka” fountain near the hotel. And right at the entrance, visitors are greeted by a monument to director Shaken Aimanov.
