The Monument to Zhambyl Zhabayev

Location: The intersection of Dostyk Avenue and Zhambyl Street.

What’s interesting about it?

Zhambyl Zhabayev is a respected national poet (akyn) in Kazakhstan. His poetry is connected with the lives of ordinary people; he composed many lyrical, every day, social, and satirical songs, heroic poems, and fairy tales. Zhambyl's works have been translated into 160 languages. The monument was built on the 150th birthday of the poet.

What to see?

The sculptural composition shows the poet sitting in front of a stone fountain wall, symbolizing a spring in the mountain. Akyn looks thoughtfully into the distance; his right hand lies on his knee, and there is a dombra in his left hand.

A park around the monument has benches for a break and a small pond. Here, you can relax and then walk on the path or visit the nearby monuments to Shokan Ualikhanov, Taras Shevchenko, Alexander Pushkin, Herold Belger, and Shamshi Kaldayakov. A little higher, along Dostyk Avenue, there is the Kazakhstan Hotel and the Palace of the Republic, on the square in front of which there is a monument to Abai.

When is the best time to visit?

You can come here any time of the year, but you can admire the fountain only in the warm season when it works.
