Park of Soviet Monuments

Location: The square is located behind the Sary-Arka cinema at Altynsarin Street, 24a.

What’s interesting about it?

This place is like a time capsule. Monuments to Vladimir Lenin, Mikhail Frunze, Maxim Gorky, and Mikhail Kalinin, fighters for the establishment of Soviet power in Semirechye, and busts of Pavel Vinogradov and Dmitry Furmanov dismantled in the post-Soviet era, were “exiled” to this park. Anyone who wants to learn more about the history of Kazakhstan should come to the park.

What to see?

This place is interesting because of the history of the movement of monuments from different parts of the city. At the entrance, you meet a monument to Kalinin, which was placed once at the Almaty-2 train station, then moved to a park in the Auezov district, and then to the Sary-Arka park.

At the end of the square, you can find other monuments. The Lenin monument was moved here from Astana Square. The Monument to the fighters for establishing Soviet power in Semirechye moved here from the intersection of Raiymbek Batyr Avenue and Pushkin Street. Mikhail Frunze’s monument used to stand in the park on Kabanbai Batyr Street. The bust of Pavel Vinogradov used to “live” on Karasai Batyr. The monument to Maxim Gorky has moved from Central Park. The bust of Furmanov was moved from Nazarbayev Avenue.

When is the best time to visit?

“Sary-Arka” Square is available for visiting at any time of the year, but it is best to do it in the evening to feel the unusual atmosphere of the place.
