What’s interesting about it?
This lake is located at an altitude of 1,760 meters above sea level in the Issyk Gorge. The reservoir was formed as a result of a mountain collapse 8,000-10,000 years ago. The last collapse occurred on July 7, 1963, as a result of which the lake became half its size. Locals call the lake “a diamond in a granite frame.” The color of Issyk Lake constantly changes depending on the weather. When clouds cover the sky, the lake becomes gray, but under the bright sunlight, the water in the lake turns turquoise, blue, or even green. It is too cold to swim there; for example, in July, the water temperature is only +9 degrees.
When is the best time to visit?
The most popular months for holidays on Lake Issyk are late spring, summer, and autumn. Please pay attention to storm warnings, as the road to the lake may be closed.
