Location: Latifa Hamidi Street, 30.

What’s interesting about it?

Iversko-Seraphimsky Convent is the oldest temple in Almaty. It was built according to the design of the architect Vyacheslav Brusentsov in 1895, replacing an earlier cathedral built in 1871 and destroyed by an earthquake in 1887. This ruined cathedral, in turn, was built on the site of a house of worship built in 1855. This date is associated with the year of the foundation of the city of Verny, which makes St. Sophia Cathedral the first temple in the capital of Semirechye.

What to see?

The area of the walls and vaults of the cathedral is more than 2000 square meters. The frescoes depict figures of Christ, the Mother of God, apostles, and saints, painted in the best traditions of Palekh masters. The largest church bells in Kazakhstan are located here. The Cossack Museum, where you can learn about the life and culture of the Cossacks, who lived in the city of Verny, is next to the temple.

When is the best time to visit?

The temple is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
