Location: Located in the city center in the Almaly district on Tole bi street between Panfilov and Abylay Khan streets.
What’s interesting about it?
Until 1975, when Republic Square was opened, Astana Square was the central city square. Since the time of Vernyi City, it has changed several names: Military Square, Military Sobornaya, Cossack Square, Barracks, Parade Square, and Red Square. Troop reviews, military parades, and combat training were also held there.
What kind of entertainment is there?
The Kazakh-British Technical University is located on the northern side of Astana Square. On the opposite side is a square with a monument to Aliya Moldagulova and Manshuk Mametova. KBTU is located in the former building of the Supreme Council of the KazSSR, built in the late 1950s of the 20th century.
The Alley of Eminent Figures, with busts of Alibi Zhangeldin, Uraz Zhandosov, Amangeldy Imanov, Turar Ryskulov, Magazy Masanchi, Saken Seifullin, Abdulla Rozybakiev and other figures of the Soviet period, is near the square. Also, you can find the Monument to Lovers nearby. The main walking street of Almaty, Panfilov Street, crosses Astana Square.
When is the best time to visit?
The Old Square is attractive for walking at any time. Concerts, city events, and fairs are often held there.
