The Republican State Academic Korean Theater
Location: Bogenbai Batyr Street, 158.
What’s interesting about it?
It is the very first professional national Korean theater in the world and the only ethnic Korean theater operating outside of Korea. It was founded in 1932 in Vladivostok. The theater moved to Almaty in 1968. The National Theater of Korea in Seoul, by comparison, dates back to 1950. Cooperation has been established between these theaters.
What kind of entertainment is there?
The basis of the theater's repertoire consists of works by Korean national playwrights as well as productions by Kazakh and foreign authors. All plays are performed in Korean with simultaneous translation. All genres of national Korean art are concentrated in the theater: the folklore and ethnographic ensemble “Samulnori,” the ballet troupe of Korean dance, solo artists, vocalists, and the drama troupe.
The repertoire includes not only national Korean works, such as the drama “Is It Easy to Be a Queen,” the fairy tale about two brothers, Heungbu and Nolbu, and the play “Ho Gildonden,” but also works by Kazakh authors, as well as foreign and Russian classics.
When is the best time to visit?
The theater season lasts from September to June.
