Big Almaty Lake

Location: All routes to BAL start from Dulati Street. You can use a car or public transport, but you can only approach the lake itself on foot.

What’s interesting about it?

Big Almaty Lake is located at an altitude of 2,511 meters above sea level, which is higher than the city by 1,611 meters. This lake was formed as the result of earthquakes and landslides that blocked the valley of the Bolshaya Almatinka River 2,000 years ago.

Snow-capped mountain peaks are reflected on the surface of the lake. Among them, three peaks can be distinguished: Kanysh Satpayev, Ozerny, and Tourist. Another outstanding peak, the Big Almaty Peak, is attached to them. A pyramid on this peak is visible from the city.

Swimming here is prohibited by law. BAL covers up to 30 percent of Almaty's drinking water needs. There is an observation deck nearby. This place is very popular for photo shoots. On the way to the lake, hotels and recreation areas are available where tourists can enjoy Kazakh cuisine.

When is the best time to visit?

You can visit BAL at any time of the year, but you should follow storm warnings from the Almaty Emergency Situations Department. On the way there, you should pay a fee of 545 tenge at the eco-post. An additional 1,100 tenge is charged for entry if you go by car. You should have a passport or identity card with you since BAL is a border zone.
