Two Kazakh heroines: The Monument to Aliya Moldagulova and Manshuk Mametova
Location: Memorial Square, named after Aliya Moldagulova and Manshuk Mametova (square of Tole Bi - Abylai Khan - Bogenbai Batyr - Panfilov streets).
What’s interesting about it?
Manshuk Mametova was the first Kazakh woman awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in World War II. She died in 1943 in the battles for Nevel’s liberation (Pskov region). She alone killed 70 enemy soldiers with a machine gun while defending the hill.
Sniper Aliya Moldagulova was a Hero of the Soviet Union in World War II. She killed 78 fascists and personally led her fellow soldiers into battle. She died in the battle for Kazachiha village, Pskov region, in 1944.
The stars of Heroes and their names in Kazakh are engraved on the pedestal. Behind it is a stele made out of white stone. It shows children and birds flying from their hands. The stela symbolizes the peace that Aliya and Manshuk achieved through their heroism.
How did it appear?
The monument was established on October 25, 1997. Aliya and Manshuk were not familiar with each other and had never met, but together, they symbolize the heroism of Kazakh women.
What's interesting nearby?
The monument is located in the park of the same name. It’s a nice place for walking with children, and it is also popular among young people. Significant city events often take place on this square. The Panfilov and Tulebaev walking streets are also located nearby.
