Ascension Cathedral
Location: Gogol Street, 40V.
What’s interesting about it?
The impressive architectural monument has no equal, not only in Kazakhstan but also in the world. The cathedral's construction was preceded by several destructive earthquakes in Verny City. It was the first building to be built in the city under earthquake-resistant regulations.
Even the strong earthquake of 1911, which destroyed many city buildings and church bells, could not cause any serious damage to this 56-meter-high wooden church. This church looks amazing: five brightly colored domes with crosses that rise majestically above the ground. The highest point at the upper end of the cross on the main dome is 39.64 meters, at the top of the bell tower, it is 46 meters. It can accommodate 1,800 people. The interior decor of the cathedral is also impressive: manuscripts on the walls, iconography, and architectural details create a unique atmosphere of spirituality and beauty.
How did it appear?
The decision to build a cathedral in Verny was made in 1872. However, more than 30 years later, the idea finally came to life. Before this, parishioners used a temporary wooden building. Only the initiative of Andrei Zenkov, a regional engineer, made it possible to complete construction in 1907. As a result, the world's tallest Orthodox wooden church appeared in the city.
