Tengrinews.kz – A new public holiday, which will officially be observed as a non-working day, has been introduced in Kazakhstan. The additional day off is linked to the entry into force of the country's new Constitution on July 1.
When it will be celebrated
As of July 1, March 15 has officially become Constitution Day in Kazakhstan. The date has been declared as a national public holiday.
This is stipulated in the text of the new Constitution, specifically Article 94, Paragraph 2:
"The day on which the Constitution is adopted through a nationwide referendum shall be declared a national public holiday – Constitution Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan."
Previously, Constitution Day in Kazakhstan was celebrated on August 30. However, that date has now been officially abolished. The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection had earlier confirmed that August 30 will no longer be a public holiday.
"Our new Constitution was adopted on March 15. That day will now be Constitution Day. From now on, we will celebrate it on March 15," said Labor Minister Askabek Yertayev.
What else has changed
With the new Constitution now in force, both chambers of Parliament—the Mazhilis and the Senate—have ceased to exist. Within one month, the President must announce elections to the new unicameral Parliament, the Kurultai, which must then be held within the following two months.
The new system of government also introduces the position of Vice President. The Vice President will be appointed by the Head of State with the approval of the Kurultai. Their responsibilities will include representing the President in Parliament, participating in international events, and carrying out other duties assigned by the President.
In addition, the Halyq Kenesi (People's Council) will begin operating. The body will serve as the country's highest consultative platform and will have the authority to introduce legislative initiatives. It is expected to strengthen cooperation between state institutions and society in discussions on key issues related to Kazakhstan's development.
