On September 2, a major traffic accident occurred on one of the busy streets in Karaganda, resulting in one fatality and several injuries. Among the injured was Yulia Shyakhmetova. That day, she and her uncle had taken their younger child to a development center, and on the way back, near their home, an uncontrollable Lexus crashed into the traffic. Yulia, who was in one of the vehicles, was hospitalized in serious condition with fractures, bruises, and hematomas.
“Yulia's car ended up at the epicenter of the crash — the vehicle of the deceased driver collided with our Nissan, which had been hit by the Lexus at high speed. Yulia is still in the hospital, immobilized, having undergone two surgeries and is currently in the trauma intensive care unit. She is in her eighth month of pregnancy, and we are expecting our fourth child. After the accident, we are worried about the baby’s health, but the doctors have not given any forecasts yet,” said Yulia's husband, Rustam Shyakhmetov.
Rustam does not believe the version that the Lexus driver suddenly became ill while driving.
“There are video recordings on social media showing that minutes before the accident, the driver was overtaking cars in the oncoming lane and clearly maneuvering. If he was feeling unwell, why didn’t he call a taxi or drive with a chauffeur? Witnesses saw him storm out of the office, shouting into the phone. Maybe he was chasing someone. We don’t know for sure, but this accident felt like a terrorist attack,” says the Karaganda resident.
Rustam Shyakhmetov noted that the suspect, Sergey Kamaev, who was driving the Lexus on the day of the tragedy, has appealed the decision of the Karaganda investigative court to keep him in custody.
“The arrest of the driver is legal and fair. This is a huge tragedy for all the victims and the family of the deceased. How can one reconcile in such a situation? Who guarantees the health of our unborn child and the recovery of my wife? Money can’t fix this,” said Rustam Shyakhmetov.
Recall that on September 2, a major traffic accident occurred on the busy Amanzholov Street in Karaganda, involving six vehicles. Drivers of two cars were hospitalized with various injuries. The Lexus SUV was driven by Sergey Kamaev, a well-known local entrepreneur.
