World-class welders will be trained in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Director of the Contracts Agency informational-analytical oil and gas center Zhan Nurbekov as saying at the forum of oil and gas companies called Oil and Gas: Kazakhstan Content-2012. According to Zhan Nurbekov, there is an agreement to start the training of welders for oil and gas sector in Aktau. "At the initiative of Kazenergy and thanks to Total, we have been included into the International Welding Institute programs. We will now train the welders in Aktau. They will be world-class experts. They will provide us with guarantees that the person who successfully completes the course will possess a certain set of skills and so the quality of his work will be guaranteed. Instead of importing 50 thousand professionals will be be importing 15-20 thousand for major projects (substituting foreign labor with local professionals). Besides, with training will make Kazkahstan citizens more flexible: upon completion of the local project they will be able to work in Russia and Azerbaijan," Nurbekov said. According to Nurbekov, oil and gas companies are spending 1 percent of their contract cost on training of their employees. This makes around $100 million per year. "Subsoil users spend these money on training of their own employees. Normally, they don't have many employees, so not all of this training money pool is usually spent. These money are spent on training local people. We have major projects coming in future: gas-processing plant will be built, Kashagan will start offshore operations, TCO will have big projects as well. They will all need many people, up to 50 thousand professionals during peak periods. To avoid mass import of foreigner labor force, we need to train local people. But our problem now is that when oil and gas contractor agrees to employ a local welder the latter is required to hold an international certificate, because as it is a huge responsibility. Poor welding can cause a pipe to explode at some point, for instance," Nurbekov said at the forum.
