April 15, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Yerlan Idrissov and Baroness Warsi, Senior Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, met in Astana, Kazakhstan’s capital city.
Kazakhstan’s Vice Foreign Minister Aleksei Volkov and Baroness Warsi signed bilateral documents on transit of Great Britain’s cargoes from Afghanistan to facilitate effective withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the statement reads.
Besides, Minister Idrissov and Baroness Warsi broached the subjects related to the situation in Ukraine, Iran’s nuclear program, the current situation in Afghanistan against the backdrop of the presidential election and withdrawal of most of the military contingent of the international coalition before the end of 2014. The sides emphasized interest in peaceful settlement of the situation in Ukraine through negotiations and diplomatic efforts, including timely talks among the EU, Russia, the USA and Ukraine to be held in Geneva April 17; and interests in effective negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
The two sides highlighted the importance of the intergovernmental committee for trade and economic, science and culture cooperation, and of the Kazakh-British Trade and Industry Council. The trade turnover in 2013 made up $2.1 billion (with exports of $1.5 and imports of $0.6 billion). Great Britain is the third largest investor into the Kazakh economy after the Netherlands and the USA. According to the Kazakhstan’s Central Bank, direct British investments into the Kazakh economy from 2005 to September 2013 totaled $10 billion.
Another round of talks of the intergovernmental committee is expected to be held in May in Astana on the sidelines of the Astana Economic Forum and of the Kazakhstan Business Forum to be held in London in October.
The sides also dwelt on simplification of visa regime for Kazakhstan’s citizens and the current status of Kazakhstan’s campaign to be a nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council in 2017-2018.
