Tengrinews.kz – Passengers have been warned about possible air travel disruptions in France on September 18 and 19.

The country’s largest air traffic controllers' union, SNCTA, has announced a nationwide 24-hour strike, which will begin in the morning of September 18 and end the following morning.

According to the union, the action will affect all airports across the country, including the Charles de Gaulle hub in Paris. Both air traffic controllers (ICNA and TSEEAC) and CDG traffic control staff are expected to participate in the protest.

Reason for the strike

In a published statement, SNCTA explained that the decision is due to the need for “2024 inflation recovery.”

“SNCTA cannot accept the fact that the work of air traffic controllers, the productivity ensured by the current protocol, and the public aeronautical service are being devalued year after year,” the union stated.

The union is demanding salary adjustments in line with inflation and the creation of an annual negotiation framework with authorities, in accordance with European standards.

It also emphasized that the salaries of French air traffic controllers are paid from European funds and do not burden the state budget.

“Inflation adjustment does not fall on the state budget or taxpayers. These costs have already been covered by airlines and should be reflected in the draft budget,” SNCTA said.

Possible impact on passengers

According to Eurocontrol, which coordinates air traffic across Europe, mass delays and cancellations are expected due to the strike. The disruptions may affect not only domestic flights within France, but also routes that pass through French airspace. This means flights from the UK, Spain, Italy, and other European countries may also be affected.

Passengers are advised to reschedule their trips to other dates if possible.

Passenger advice

  • Check your flight status on your airline’s website and airport resources before departure.
  • Consider alternative routes or train travel if available.
  • If flying is unavoidable, allow extra time for connections and transfers.
