The fire erupted on Sunday, August 11, northeast of Athens, according to Kathimerini. It then spread to Mount Penteli, located to the north of the Greek capital, prompting authorities to initiate evacuations from several towns.
"The rapidly spreading blaze, fueled by hot and windy weather, has already destroyed trees, homes, and vehicles, blanketing the city with thick smoke," the report states.
On Monday, August 12, an emergency meeting was held at a mobile command center under the leadership of Deputy Fire Chief Lieutenant General Nikolaos Roumeliotis, with the regional mayor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, and mayors from the affected areas, according to Athens News.
According to Fire Service spokesperson Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, despite efforts, the fire continued to spread.
The battle against the flames involves 510 firefighters, 16 forest airborne units, and 152 vehicles, along with a large number of volunteers. Airplanes and helicopters are also being used.
"Five people have been taken to hospital with breathing problems due to the thick smoke engulfing Attica, one firefighter suffered second-degree burns," the publication said.
The firefighter is expected to need the help of plastic surgeons.
