A recently installed fountain in the city park of Astana became an object of ridicule from Internet users.
The unusual fountain is made in the form of a cup with a hole in the bottom. Some users called it a “monument to Kazakhstan's budget."
But what does the new installation really mean?
“As planned by the architects, an even, laminar flow of water in the channel symbolises the stream of time," the city administration explained at the request of Tengrinews. "Four round fountains with foamy streams divide a rather extended (over 450 meters) alley into even sections creating a certain rhythm and a sense of movement."
They also explained that the composition was not yet complete. More elements will be added before the end of the year.
“Similar architectural techniques are used in many European parks and are quite popular," they said.
