Media calculates Winter Olympics cost for Almaty
Kazakhstan's expenses on hosing the 2022 Winter Olympics in Almaty are expected to exceed $5 billion. This is only a preliminary calculation and in practice the initial budget almost doubles before the actual Games, according to Kazakhstan's leading sports portal Vesti.kz. Almaty would have had to spend even more if it didn't have all its specialized sports infrastructure: ski jumping complex, high-mountain skating rink, skiing and biathlon stadium. Almaty will only have to construct a bobsleigh course and an Olympic Village from the scratch. Besides, it would need a couple of extra hotels to accommodate all the visitors. The budget also includes expenditures for broadcasting, security, volunteers and a culture program. Almaty submitted its bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics on August 16, 2013. Kazakhstan’s competitors are Quebec, Lvov, Toulouse, Harbin, Munich, Barcelona, Krakow and Oslo. The 2022 Winter Olympics is an event to be organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The host city will be selected on July 31, 2015 at the 127th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur. The bidding calendar was unveiled by the IOC in October 2012, with the application deadline set to November 14, 2013.
