Tengrinews.kz — Three supporters of Belgian football club Club Brugge were detained by police at Astana Arena during a match against Kairat. According to videos circulating on social media, the fans attempted to mock locals by wearing costumes associated with a well-known fictional character.
After the Champions League match between Kairat and Club Brugge, videos appeared online showing Belgian fans changing into green swimsuits in the stands. The outfits closely resembled those worn by the character Borat, portrayed by actor Sacha Baron Cohen in the movie Borat.
It was later confirmed that Kazakh police detained the supporters.
“On January 20, during a football match at the stadium, three men committed actions expressing disrespect toward others and disrupting public order. Police officers detained three foreign fans and escorted them to a police station,” the Astana police department said in response to a request from Tengrinews.
“Administrative proceedings have been initiated for appearing in a public place while intoxicated and for minor hooliganism. The case materials have been forwarded to court for a decision. The offenders were placed in a temporary detention facility,” the statement added.
The match ended in a 4–1 victory for the Belgian side.

Borat costumes often used by foreign fans
Borat Sagdiyev is a controversial fictional character created and portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen. In the film, Borat is depicted as a Kazakh television journalist who presents the country in a negative and stereotypical manner during his travels abroad.
In the previous season, when London club Chelsea visited Kazakhstan, one of the fans brought a flag featuring the Borat character into the stadium. The flag was later confiscated by police in Almaty.
