Tengrinews.kz – A powerful geomagnetic storm is expected to peak in the coming days as Earth enters the influence of a high-speed solar wind stream, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Space Research Institute reported.
Scientists said a large coronal hole has formed on the Sun, sending solar wind toward Earth. Our planet is forecast to be affected starting the night of September 13–14, when the wind speed will begin to rise from the current 400 kilometers per second to 500–600 km/s by September 14–15, potentially reaching up to 700 km/s on September 16.
“Geomagnetic disturbances from the new coronal hole could last up to six days, with the peak expected on September 14–16,” the laboratory noted.
September has already shown unusually high solar activity. In the first 10 days of the month, three geomagnetic storms were recorded — one every three days, compared to just a single storm in all of August.
Researchers also highlighted Earth’s unusual sensitivity to even minor solar impacts, citing the unexpected geomagnetic storm of September 10. Because of this, scenarios involving stronger-than-usual disturbances are now considered more likely.
Forecasts suggest geomagnetic activity could range from weak to strong storm levels (G1–G3).
