Kazakhstan to help NASA protect satellites from garbage

Kazakhstan scientists are going to be studying the problems of space garbage together with NASA, Director of Almaty-based Fesenkov Astrophysical Institute (APHI) Chingiz Omarov told Tengrinews. KazCosmos, the national space agency of Kazakhstan, and NASA discussed several projects of Kazakhstan institutes that range from medicine to astrophysics. "Observation of space garbage is one of the issues astrophysics is dealing with. The garbage poses a threat to all the satellites, including the Kazakhstan KazSat satellite and the satellites that Kazakhstan will put into the orbit later this year. We brought up the problem of the space garbage, and it will be added to the agenda of the next meeting in Houston, Texas that will take place in the second half of this year. This issue is of internets to both the United States and Kazakhstan. And with our geographical locations being so different, together we can keep up a round-the-clock observation," the Director of the institute said. During a recent meeting in Almaty Talgat Mussabayev, head of KazCosmos, reminded that Kazakhstan was planning to launch three satellites in 2014. KazSat 3, a telecommunication satellite, will be launched in April 2014. It is expected to spend at least 15 years in the orbit. And two Earth remote sensing satellites - a high resolution and a medium resolution one - are going to be launched in the first half of the year as well. By Dmitry Khegai
