President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev spoke about the notion of “democracy” at the XVI Congress of the party Nur Otan on March 11 when he also declared his intention of running for presidency in the upcoming election, a Tengrinews correspondent reports.

"Today, we can see firsthand in many countries near and far a series of civil wars and bloody conflicts is taking place. These show that ill-conceived forced democratization does not guarantee stability of a country and does not provide for successful economic modernization,” he said.

“I witnessed the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Then came glasnost, when everything that was bad was made public and discussed everywhere, all the 'dirt' was thrown into the light but three was no one to clean it up. And amid all these happenings people developed an antipathy to the word “democracy,” for example in Russia, it become a synonym to poverty, theft and murder. But this is not right. Democracy is a noble cause. Many prosperous states live according to this system," Nazarbayev said.

The President said that Kazakhstan’s further development necessitated taking into account its national specifics. "So we need to be careful. Our path is clear, we go along with the world community, but we must not forget our roots, our Asian specifics. The consequences of uncouth political elections can be seem from the situations currently unfolding in many countries," he said.

Nazarbayev added that citizens of many such countries forgot what it meant to work hard and turned rallies into a thing of fashion.

"People are rushing to rallies as if to work every day. They are paid by provocateurs and elections become a factor separating brothers rather than uniting them. Street politicking and life from election to election is not a path of a wise country. Desire for power out of personal interests does not add dignity. Elections must be held not for the sake of election but to bring the country to unity," he said.
