Any successful integration must be designed to bring economic benefits, Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev stated in his speech at the 21st Session of the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan late last week, Tengrinews reports.

"I believe that the choice of integration for any country is a matter of the nation’s wealth, first and foremost. Successful and beneficial integration is only that, which is based not on political expediency but on solid economic reason that benefits each of the participants and creates conditions for employment and business. This [kind of integration] brings countries closer,” Nazarbayev declared.

This [kind of integration] brings countries closer,” Nazarbayev declared.

The Eurasian Economic Union (EurAsEC) of Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus is a project that runs precisely along these lines, he said. “Here in Astana we plan to sign a historic treaty establishing this integrative union. Symbolical is the fact that it will be signed on the 20th anniversary of the idea of a Eurasian Union, which I brought forward in the MSU [Moscow State University],” Nazarbayev pointed out.

The president also pointed out that the Eurasian Union was designed to help the three countries "make a technological leap forward" and to "help each other survive the global competition".

He reminded that Kazakhstan was preparing to join the World Trade Organization as well. "The integration there will be more complicated, because it is not about three countries but about the whole world. We have to prepare, our business needs to toughen in this integration," he said.
