The first bone marrow transplantation to a kid has been made in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports citing press-service of the National Medical Holding. On April 25 bone marrow was transplanted to a 14-year-old boy with acute myelogenous leukemia in the Maternity and Childhood Center in Astana. “Until today Kazakhstan kids were forced to go abroad for transplantation of bone marrow. These procedure costs around $100-150 thousand in other countries and the state spends lots of money to give the kids a chance for recovery. Right now this type of highly-specialized medical aid is available in Kazakhstan,” the press-service of the National Medical Holding writes noting that the surgery was made at the cost of the state budget. The boy who arrived to Astana from Ust-Kamenogorsk was operated on by doctors of the National Scientific Center for Maternity and Childhood along with their colleagues from Raissa Gorbacheva Institute of Children Hematology and Transplantology (Saint-Petersburg). The doctors are expected to perform 10 other transplantations this year. 30 more bone marrow transplantations to children will be performed at the state’s cost later on.
