The number of HIV-positive women who resolve to give birth to children is growing in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing Express-K. According to Marat Tukeyev, general director of the National AIDS Prevention Center,106 HIV-positive women have given birth to healthy babies (out of 176 HIV-positive pregnant women). The statistics was announced on the occasion of the Memorial Day to commemorate the people who died of AIDS. There are 18 549 HIV-positive citizens registered in Kazakhstan at present. Death-rate among HIV-positive people decreased by 7% in 2011. “It became possible because of the larger coverage of people with antiretroviral therapy. We are registering new modern medical products that have been successfully tested abroad. All the patients undergo preventive medical examinations and visit different medical experts,” Tukeyev said. He added that unprotected sex still remains the main channel of HIV infection. The risk of infection among drug addicts is growing. The Day of Memory of the people who died of AIDS is celebrated on the third Sunday of May all over the world. Several events timed to this Day were held in Almaty. A special football match was held at Dynamo stadium. At the concert that at Arbat (pedestrian part of Zhibek Zholy Street between Furmanov Street to Abylay Khan Avenue) prominent Kazakhstan sportsmen and showmen paid tribute to those who died of AIDS. All those wishing to take an HIV test could do it free of charge and on a no-name basis in a special mobile laboratory.
