Tengrinews.kz — May 1 is celebrated as the Day of Unity of the People of Kazakhstan. In honor of the holiday, the Bureau of National Statistics reported which ethnic groups were the most numerous in the country at the beginning of 2026.
As of March 1, 2026, Kazakhstan’s population stood at 20,532,240.
The most numerous ethnic groups in the country are:
- Kazakhs — 14,664,202;
- Russians — 2,943,022;
- Uzbeks — 695,557;
- Ukrainians — 367,547;
- Uyghurs — 309,164;
- Germans — 222,890;
- Tatars — 218,361;
- Azerbaijanis — 157,568;
- Koreans — 120,821;
- Turks — 93,234;
- Dungans — 88,165;
- Belarusians — 73,788;
- Tajiks — 61,307;
- Kurds — 52,077;
- Kyrgyz — 41,459.
According to the bureau, the largest number of Kazakhs live in the Turkestan Region — 1.6 million. The biggest share of Russians lives in Almaty — 428,000. Most Uzbeks also live in the Turkestan Region — 404,000 people. Most Ukrainians live in the Kostanay Region — 83,000. Of the 309,000 Uyghurs in the country, the majority live in Almaty — 124,000 people.
