Tengrinews.kz - Doctors at the National Center for Neurosurgery in Astana have removed a massive brain tumor from a three-month-old girl, citing the Ministry of Healthcare's press service.
The baby was born full-term and developed normally. However, at the age of two months, alarming symptoms began to appear: frequent regurgitation, refusal to breastfeed, cyanosis, and severe restlessness.
The parents of the girl, Aibat, immediately sought medical help. An ultrasound scan revealed a fluid-filled mass in the parieto-occipital region, and a CT scan confirmed a large mass in the left parietal lobe. An MRI later showed the tumor measured 5.6 by 4.2 centimeters.
Following consultations with specialists, an urgent surgery was scheduled. According to Gabit Olenbay, head of the pediatric neurosurgery department and professor, the operation was extremely difficult: the tumor occupied nearly half of the baby's brain, and the risk of blood loss was very high. However, thanks to teamwork, modern techniques, and the center's advanced equipment, the surgery was successful.
“We removed the tumor using microsurgical methods. The girl is now undergoing postoperative treatment and already feels better. The regurgitation has stopped, and her overall condition has improved,” said Gabit Olenbay.
The baby’s mother could barely hold back tears: “I was prepared for anything and understood the risks. But a miracle happened—my daughter is alive and doing well. I thank the doctors from the bottom of my heart, especially Dmitriy Andreevich Surdin and the entire medical staff. Thank you for saving my daughter!”
The Ministry of Healthcare emphasized that anesthesiologists and transfusion specialists played a crucial role in the operation, as administering anesthesia and monitoring the condition of such a young patient requires extreme precision and care.
Earlier, President Tokayev congratulated Kazakh surgeons for performing the country's first triple kidney transplant.
