Tengrinews.kz - President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has congratulated the National Scientific Center of Surgery named after A.N. Syzganov following a groundbreaking medical achievement, his press secretary, Ruslan Zheldibay, reported.
According to Zheldibay, for the first time in Kazakhstan, a complex triple cross kidney transplant was successfully carried out at the center under the leadership of renowned surgeon Professor Bolatbek Baimakhanov.
In an official letter of gratitude, the President described the surgery as a major milestone in the development of Kazakh medicine.
"The government places particular importance on the development of healthcare. The implementation of large-scale initiatives and extensive efforts has led to significant progress in our medical system. This unique operation clearly demonstrates that progress. Kazakhstan is now among only six countries in the world capable of performing such complex transplant procedures," the letter read.
Tokayev also praised the dedication and expertise of the medical team, stating that their selfless work, deep knowledge, and invaluable experience were crucial to the operation’s success.
“I express my sincere gratitude and am confident that you will continue working tirelessly to improve the health of our nation,” he wrote.
What is a triple-cross kidney transplant?
The procedure involves a three-way kidney exchange between three donor-recipient pairs who are incompatible with their own relative but compatible with someone from another pair. Each donor gives a kidney not to their own loved one, but to a matched recipient from a different pair.
These transplants are conducted simultaneously in multiple operating rooms to avoid the risk of last-minute withdrawal and ensure success, requiring a high level of coordination and professionalism from the medical teams.
The A.N. Syzganov National Scientific Center of Surgery, based in Almaty, was founded in 1945 by the legendary Kazakh surgeon Alexander Syzganov and remains one of the country’s leading surgical institutions.
