The supervisory authority said that provocative posts and comments aimed at inciting discord in society are being circulated on social media.

“We remind everyone that such actions are absolutely unacceptable and will be strictly prosecuted under the law. Under Article 174 of the Criminal Code, incitement of discord is punishable by a fine ranging from 2,000 to 7,000 monthly calculation indices, or by restriction or deprivation of liberty for a term of two to 20 years, depending on the severity of the offense,” the agency said.

The Prosecutor General’s Office also reminded citizens that “the posting and distribution of illegal content on online platforms is prohibited in Kazakhstan.”

“Violation of this prohibition, provided that the actions do not constitute a criminal offense, carries a fine of 20 monthly calculation indices under Part 3-1 of Article 456-2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses,” the statement said.

Prosecutors recommended paying particular attention to verifying the accuracy of information being circulated and refraining from publishing or distributing materials capable of provoking discord in society.

“Administrative liability for posting or distributing false information is provided for under Part 3 of Article 456-2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In cases involving the dissemination of knowingly false information, Article 274 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan provides for criminal liability,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

Law enforcement officials also emphasized that “legal consequences apply not only to the authors of such publications but also to individuals who knowingly participate in their distribution.”

“The Prosecutor General’s Office urges citizens not to succumb to provocations, not to spread unverified information, and to refrain from publications and comments capable of undermining public harmony and mutual respect between citizens. The unity of the people of Kazakhstan, mutual respect and public harmony are fundamental values on which the stability, security and further development of our country depend,” the statement said.

The Prosecutor General’s Office assured that “under the principle of Law and Order, law enforcement agencies will suppress any offenses that threaten public safety and public order, as well as take measures prescribed by law to prevent them.”
