Tengrinews.kz – On November 6, hurricane-force winds swept through Astana, toppling structures, uprooting trees, and damaging cars and playgrounds. Social media has been flooded with photos and videos capturing the aftermath of the storm.

The weather in Astana deteriorated sharply last evening: strong winds and snowfall severely reduced visibility on the roads. Due to the conditions, students from both shifts were moved to remote learning. This morning, residents struggled to get around due to the gusty winds.

In one courtyard of the 'Severnoe Siyanie' residential complex, the wind was so strong it blew a bench off the playground.

On Mangilik El Street, benches and trash bins were overturned by the force of the wind.

The Astana embankment this morning, with benches scattered by the wind.

The powerful winds also caused a tower crane to collapse in the city.

Tengrinews.kz reached out to Astana’s Emergency Situations Department for comments. According to the department, 19 incidents related to the severe weather were reported, including:

  • Tower crane collapse: 1
  • Roof structure damage: 8
  • Roof damage on administrative buildings: 2
  • Balcony structure damage: 1
  • Vehicle damage from falling debris and trees: 6
  • Other damages: 1

“Emergency inspectors were dispatched to document the incidents,” the department reported.

A storm warning has been issued for the capital due to worsening weather conditions. The forecast predicts strong winds, icy roads, and blizzards on November 6-7. Wind speeds are expected to reach 15-20 m/s, with gusts of up to 30 m/s or more in some areas.

From 9:00 p.m. on November 6, several national highways were closed due to poor visibility caused by the snowstorm:

  • Astana – Petropavlovsk (from 9:00 p.m.)
  • Yekaterinburg – Almaty (from 11:00 p.m.)
  • Astana – Pavlodar border (closed from 1:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. on November 7)

Residents and visitors are advised to limit outdoor activity and stay indoors whenever possible.

To avoid injuries or accidents during high winds:

  1. Stay indoors during strong winds.
  2. Do not leave children unsupervised.
  3. If caught outside, seek shelter in underground passages or stores.
  4. Avoid standing near walls, as roofing materials could fall.
  5. Never take cover near bus stops, billboards, unfinished buildings, or trees.
  6. Stay away from power lines and avoid touching fallen wires.
  7. Keep a safe distance from old or rotting trees and do not park vehicles near them.
