Tengrinews.kz - A 45-day-old baby weighing just 1 kilogram has undergone a complex heart surgery in Shymkent, according to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Healthcare.
The surgery was performed at the city’s perinatal center, where the infant, born prematurely at 25 weeks, was first admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit in early March. At birth, the baby weighed only 655 grams and measured 28 centimeters in length.
Doctors diagnosed the newborn with a congenital heart defect known as patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), along with respiratory distress syndrome. Due to the severity of the condition, the baby was immediately placed on a ventilator.
The medical team consulted repeatedly with pediatric cardiac surgeons before deciding to operate once the infant reached a body weight of 1 kilogram and its 45th day.
The delicate surgery on the infant’s heart was successfully carried out by cardiac surgeon Asan Zhumanov from the Shymkent Children's Clinical Hospital, assisted by anesthesiologist Akzhol Abdraimov from the city’s perinatal center.
“The baby’s condition is currently stable but remains critical. He is under constant supervision in the neonatal intensive care unit, overseen by Gulmira Budukova, deputy chief physician for neonatal care, and neonatologist-resuscitator Yerasyl Shabetov,” the ministry said.
