An archeological park will be constructed around a medieval tower by 2017, Tengrinews reports citing Deputy Akim (Vice-Governor) of Zhambyl Oblast Gali Iskaliev.
“We have a unique opportunity to show that Taraz is over 2000 years old. During the excavation works that have been going on for two years, archeologists found a tower, an 8-9th century mosque, an ancient well and other things. After the excavations at the 10-hectare site are finished, we plan to develop an archeological park project, create an infrastructure to attract tourists during the EXPO-2017 not only to Astana, (but in Taraz, too),” Iskaliev said.
The medieval city of Taraz (also known as Talas, Aulie-Ata and Dzhambul during various periods) was one of the major cities on the Silk Road. Taraz undergone three historical stages of destruction and recreation. The earlier stage dates back to 36 B.C. with Zhizhi fortress built in the area.
The Deputy Governor said that there would be around 15 sites created in the park, including an oriental bath and madrasah. The archeological park would showcase the life of an ancient city at its best.
“The park will be surrounded by a high wall designed in a ancient eastern style so that tourists visiting the archeological park would immerse themselves in the Medieval atmosphere (of Central Asia),” Isakliev added.
The Akimat (Municipal Authorities) also plan an overhaul of the Aulie-Ata airport. In 2014, a new terminal will be put into service. It is also planned to open international connecting flights with Russia, China and Turkey. Most of the international flights operate through Almaty and Astana airports now.
“We also have sources of renewable energy such as sun and wind. Investors are ready to finance a number of RES projects in the nearest future,” Iskaliev noted.
The total cost of the archeological park project is estimated at around $440 million. Most of the required sum will be covered from private investments. Besides, the Zhambyl Oblast Akimat has allocated $550 thousand from the budget for the archeological excavations.
