The airport in Shardara town in South Kazakhstan oblast will resume its operation after 20 years of downtime, Tengrinews reports citing Khabar TV channel.

200 million tenge ($1.07 million) will be allotted from the state budget for this purpose.

The reconstruction of its 1.5 km runway will begin in September. At the same time, a special guardrail and a reception center will be built and the facility will be reconnected to a power supply.

With the airport in place, it will take only 20 minutes to get from Shymkent to Shardara, which are located 300 km away from each other.

Special flights to Astana and Almaty will be launched from Shardara town as well.

In this context, local officials are expecting a boost of tourism to Shardara town, where the second largest water reservoir of Kazakhstan is located on the Syrdarya River. With direct flights to Shardara from Astana and Almaty it will be much easier for Kazakhstanis and foreigners to get to this beautiful place, they say.

Every summer nearly 30 thousand tourists go there to enjoy the sun on its beaches, while in other seasons a lot of hunters and fishers visit Shardara.

245 hectares have already been allocated by the local authorities to expand the beach area. The project has already found investors.

“Currently, a taxi from Shymkent to Shardara costs 2,000 tenge ($10.7), while the ticket will cost approximately 5,000 ($26.7). The price is still being discussed. The airline which will be making the flights will receive subsidies from the state. We intend to develop domestic tourism,” head of Department of Housing and Utility Services, Passenger Transport and Roads of Shardara District Rauan Koshymov said.
