A Committee on Social and Cultural Development discussed results of their suicide survey among teenagers in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews reports citing the coordinator of UNICEF Youth Health and Development Program Aigul Kadyrova.
Kadyrova drew a comparison between Kazakhstani and European teenagers. “Kazakhstani teens have a longer and tougher list of risk factors than their European peers. Besides, the high level of suicide risk and death rate is influenced by their higher impulsiveness and aggression levels. This explains why our teens chose the “deadliest” methods to commit suicide,” Kadyrova said.
Kadyrova spoke about the results of the research at the Parliament meeting dedicated to Measures to Decrease Suicide Attempts and Car Accidents Among Teens and Young Adults.
She called teen suicides “a tip of an iceberg”. Depression, Kadyrova stated, is what constitutes such behavior. “We found that 90% of teenagers in the high risk group were depressed. Notably, 20% of them had a sever case of depression. Anxiety is the second prevailing symptom of psychological problems among teens. 1% of teens indicated drinking alcohol almost everyday. In addition, 1% used drugs at least 3 times in their lives,” Kadyrova said.
“The level of alcohol and drugs use is alarming. 45% of teens from the high risk group had been seriously drunk at least once. 21% said that they had used drugs at least once. 30% smoke cigarettes,” Kadyrova added.
According to the UNICEF research, a similar teen group in Europe has 2 or 3 times lower abuse of alcohol, drugs and cigarettes.
